FRIDAY’S ‘white-out’ did not deter the guests at Meltham Golf Club’s Annual Dinner, when around 90 people braved the blizzard to attend the event hosted by this year’s captain Adrian Ashworth.

The return journey proved more problematical however, with many guests resigned to walking home, while nine people had to ‘bed down’ at the Thick Hollins club.

The principal guests and speakers were Stephen Larard, JP, president of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs, and top comedian Lea Roberts.

Mr Larard, who expressed his concern over the dwindling number of members at golf clubs, due to offers being made to ‘visitors’, paid tribute to the club’s leading county and England international golfer Jamie Bower and proposed a toast to Meltham Golf Club, while vice-captain Richard Johnstone proposed a toast to the guests.

A special presentation was made by two members Roy Johnson and Malcolm Styring, who had won the Lawerence Batley 25th Anniversary competition at Woodsome Hall, and chose to give the trophy to the club.
