MARK ENGLAND defends the PS Cockroft Trophy tomorrow – at the second attempt.
The 36-hole tournament, the Halifax, Huddersfield Union strokeplay championship, started at Ogden on July 6 but was abandoned because of torrential rain, and tomorrow switches to West End.
The leading 32 will advance to the Matchplay Championship, the first and second rounds of which were scheduled for tomorrow at West End.
England shot 72 74 to win the PS Cockroft at Bradley Hall last season, finishing a stroke ahead of Andy Shaw and Andy Whitworth.
Also at stake tomorrow is the Jubilee Trophy for the best finishing junior, held by Longley Park’s Matthew Colcombe.
Bradley Hall will have home advantage when they meet Dewsbury in the final of the Halifax, Huddersfield Union Scratch Foursomes, sponsored by Goodalls Caravans, on September 21 (start 10.00) when the finals of the Handicap and Junior Foursomes will also be decided.
Andy Appleyard and Andy Shaw scored a 3&2 win for Bradley Hall I against Huddersfield I’s Richared Broadley and Brad Tupman in the scratch event while Ben Crowther and Edward Battye steered Dewsbury II to a 2&1 win over Halifax I’s Clive Crawshaw and Mark Birkett.

Junior Foursomes (sponsored by Woodbrim) semi-finals: Crosland Heath I (Michael Lawrie & Alex Brown) bt Huddersfield I (Joe Hill & Guy Goodall) 3&2; Willow Valley (Lewis Howell & Tom Calvert) bt Longley Park I (Adam Colcombe & Matthew Colcombe) 2 holes.
Halifax, Huddersfield’s Yorkshire Inter-Union Junior League match with Teesside at Crosland Heath was hit by heavy rain, forcing the singles to be abandoned after three matches. The remaining nine were counted as drawn.
Ryan Greenwood and Matthew Colcombe won the top two singles and with Jamie Bower halving the next following the team’s 8-4 lead from the foursomes, Halifax, Huddersfield recorded a 23-15 win.
Stephen Pullen has finished top of the Junior Order of Merit, sponsored by Selbie Opticians.
The Saddleworth player appeared in all six Yorkshire Inter-Union League matches to gather 34 points.
