MARSDEN have sparked a War of the Roses – and are appealing for Yorkshire men and women to help out.

The problem is the success of their cut-price Let’s Try Golf offer. The initiative is aimed at new players who have never previously joined a club or had an official handicap. For £100, beginners can join as full members until the end of the year.

The scheme has been highly successful – there’s just one snag. Over two thirds of the keen new applicants are from over the border in Lancashire, and now the club’s Yorkshire contingent are worried they might become a minority!

Secretary Paul Coward, said: “We’ve had a massive uptake from ‘the other side of the hill,’ with over 70% of applicants being Lancastrians. Now the Yorkshire men and women in the club are fearful that we’ll soon be outnumbered.

“As far as we know our offer is unique in the area and uptake has been very encouraging.

“We’re very keen to ensure that new members are welcome, feel a real part of the club, enjoy their golf and stay on once their trial is complete.”

The club are also offering free membership for people under the age of 17 (January 1 this year).
