FIXBY progressed through the first round of the Yorkshire Inter-club Foursomes with Richard Broadley and Brad Tupman scoring a 2&1 win over Hessle at Moor Allerton.

Richard Oddy, based in Coventry, will be in contention for a place in the Fixby team for the Halifax, Huddersfield Union Team championship at Dewsbury next month.

The former county player made the trip home for the latest medal competition at Fixby and shot 73 against the SSS of 74, which got his handicap back to scratch and won him the best Division One gross prize.

Meanwhile, the prize of representing the Union in the English Junior Champion Club tournament will be on offer for the winners of the Halifax, Huddersfield Junior Team championship at Todmorden tomorrow.

Each club fields a four-man team in the event sponsored by Berties of Elland with the three best scores to count.

Rotherham’s Sam Haywood won the York Rose Bowl to replace Moortown’s Nick McCarthy at the top of the Eagle Golf Yorkshire Order of Merit.

McCarthy, 20, who sprang a surprise by declining the pace in the England Under 21 squad he held last year in order to do his own thing and play events when and where he wishes, had led after his back to back wins in the Hawksworth Trophy and Cleveland Salver.

While McCarthy missed playing at York, Haywood fired a first round 64 and went on to win by four shots.

Next event up is the Seaton Salver on May 18 followed by the Earl of Dartmouth Trophy at Woodsome Hall on May 26
