THE draw has been made for the PS Cockroft Trophy, the Halifax-Huddersfield Union strokeplay championship sponsored by Glenbrae, though the field for the 36-hole event scheduled for Crosland Heath tomorrow week has not yet been completed.
Union secretary John Lawrence was waiting for confirmation from three players before he could finalise starting times.
The top 32 players will qualify for the matchplay championship, and the Union’s big guns are entered including Andy Whitworth, record 10 times winner of that matchplay title.
The strokeplay has proved a different proposition for Whitworth, however. Just two successes – 13 years apart – have come his way.
The Bradley Hall ace is still a winner, as he proved in his club’s Scratch Cup tournament. He claimed it for the 19th time when in windy conditions he shotŠ 73 75 to win by two.
The first two rounds of the Union matchplay championship are Šat Saddleworth on August 22 , the quarter and semi-finals on September 18 at Ogden and the final at Fixby on September 26.
Meltham are back in the big time after three years in the Second Division of the Union Scratch League.
Graham McLean, Anton Sheard, Chris Mear, Jason Moore and Simon Davies all won their matches as Meltham scored a 10-0 whitewashing ofŠ Castlefields to clinch promotion back to Division One.
