DAVID ASTIN and his partner Andy Cryer edged out Outlane’s Dave Chapman and Nick Hirst to win the first of the winter season’s Alliance Golf competitions at Bradley Park.

Astin, who plays out of Hebden Bridge – although he is now also attached to Woodsome Hall – and his 11-handicap partner, came in with 38 points, to win by one point from Outlane pro Chapman, who took the second prize, thanks to a better back nine than Ryburn professional Chris Thewlis and the Alliance’s assistant secretary James Washington.

The Am-Am section was even tighter, with home pair Roger Pearson and Trevor Williams tying with Richard Badrock and Fred Leek of Castlefields with 41 points, but getting their hands on the first place prize courtesy of 22 points on the back nine.

In his speech, former Alliance president Pearson paid tribute to the late Roger Heap, the former secretary who passed away last month, and thanked the new administration who have taken up the mantle to ensure the Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance goes from strength to strength.

Current president Jim Crompton thanked Bradley Park and Parnell Reilly and the staff for ensuring the success of the Alliance.

HUDDERSFIELD New College are fourth after round one of the Grimsby Institute College golf challenge – the north’s flagship league for 16 to 18-year-old further education students.

Six colleges are involved – the next round is at Huddersfield on Wednesday October 1 – and Grimsby hosted the opening event at their own club, The Manor at Laceby.

Points are allocated on the three best nett scores and single best gross, and Scarborough Sixth Form lead on 100 points from Grimsby, Lincoln and New College (70).

The quality of golf was extremely high with England international Holly Clyburn posting a new ladies course record of 69 gross (four under) for Grimsby.
