DAVID ASTIN and playing partner Andy Cryer bagged their second Pro-Am win on the bounce when the Halifax, Huddersfield Golf Alliance made their long-awaited return to Hebden Bridge.

It is several years since an Alliance meeting was held at the nine-hole Great Mount course, and organisers were delighted with the response from the club and the superb condition of the course this week.

And it was Astin, playing on his ‘home’ ground who took full advantage of a PGA tournament cancellation to notch his second win (he and Cryer had won the opening event of the season at Bradley Park)

The Hebden professional was originally entered for the Northern PGA tournament at Worsley Park.

But when that was cancelled due to the weather, he and 11-handicapper Cryer charged to victory with 39 points, four clear of Ryburn pro Chris Thewlis and the Alliance’s assistant secretary James Washington (6)

In the Am-Am event, Richard Badrock (14) and Fred Leek (18) went one better than the previous week, when the Castlefields duo claimed victory with a 38-point tally – they had had to settle for the second prize at Bradley Park.

On this occasion it was another Hebden Bridge pairing, Ken Weatherill (8) and Peter Smith (11), who took second place, following a better back nine than regular Independent Huddersfield duo Mike Dempsey and Peter Newey, after both couples came home with 36 points.
