A DISASTROUS finish cost Chris Hanson victory in the first PGA Europro Tour event of the year, the Collingtree Masters in Northampton.

The Crosland Heath man led the field by five strokes going into yesterday's final round but he tumbled to an 81 with a quadruple bogey at the 602-yard par five last hole and finished in a tie for eighth place, three back from winner Steve Surry.

Hanson, who had looked set for his second Tour win after a brilliant second round 67, had to settle for a pay day of £875 after letting the £10,000 first prize slip through his hands.

Surry, from Cumberwell Park, shot a solid level par last day 72 for a 215 one under par total to finish a stroke clear of Paul Dwyer (Clitheroe), Elliot Saltman (Aegon) and Simon Lilley (Wellingborough).

Ironically after his second round, Hanson said: “It gave me a boost but it’s also a wake up for the others to get good scores.”

It all turned pear-shaped yesterday. Hanson bogied his first hole, got that back at the third but then dropped a shot at the 179 yards fifth and ran up a double at the 166 yards eighth which he had birdied in his day two 67 to be out in three over. More bogeys came his way at the 11th and 17th then the killer came at the last where he ran into all kinds of trouble to chalk up a nine.

“You can’t win them all, but I played enough good golf over the week to know I will win again,” said Hanson.

PAT Wrightson’s three year run as Yorkshire Veteran Ladies champion ended at Pike Hills, York, where fellow senior international Hilary Smyth claimed the title.

Wrightson shot 76 to win the Barrett Bowl as leading qualifier but then bowed out in the first matchplay round to Fixby clubmate Sandra Paul.

Seeking her fifth title overall, Wrightson was beaten on the last green by Paul, who battled to the 20th in the semi-finals before going down to Jean Manson, a 10-handicap player from Garforth, who then found Smyth too much to deal with and crashed 6&4.

First round: P Wrightson (Huddersfield) lost to S Paul (Huddersfield) 1 hole; J Manson (Garforth) bt G Palmer (Rotherham) 1 hole; J Butler (Malton & Norton) bt O Ellerington (Brough) 1 hole; M Ross (Alwoodley) lost to H Smyth (Pannal) 7&6.
