THE Examiner’s Overseas Golf Champion Denis Walters faces the relatively short trip ‘over the top’ from Crompton and Royton to play Meltham’s Jack Thewlis in the first round of this year’s Examiner Matchplay Championship.
Three former winners of the Matchplay title, along with three ex-winners of the Overseas Challenge are included in this year’s popular tournament, which has attracted a record number of entries with the outright winner landing a FREE golfing holiday, which this year is heading to Vilamoura in Portugal.
As well as the Walters v Thewlis clash – Denis was a former Marsden captain and won the Overseas Challenge in Benidorm last November – there are several more potentially close ties with Meltham’s David Law taking on another former Overseas winner Tommy Ward, who finished up winning the holiday last year, when the eventual Matchplay winner Ben Sharpe, was unable to take up the prize.
Two other former Matchplay winners are Andrew Mear, from the Cleckheaton Club, who won in 2007 and Nick Wilson from Fixby who was the 2004 champion, and they have been drawn to meet each other in the two-leg opening round.
The first-named player will have home advantage in the first leg, in which all 18 holes must be played with the score carried over to the return leg.
Should the tie be all square at the of 36 holes, sudden death will decide the outcome, down the first extra hole and so on.
As the first round is over two legs, players will have up to and including Sunday, May 30 to complete the round.
There will be an Intermediary round with six players drawn out to play each other in order to bring the draw down to a straight 16 players who then go through to the second round proper.
The final of this year’s tournament will be held at Bradley Park, on Thursday, September 23, 2010.
All competitors are asked to note the date, along with that of the holiday to Vilamoura which departs on November 4, so as to avoid disappointment.
It is the responsibility of the first-named player in the tie to contact his/her opponent to arrange a mutually convenient date and time to play.
The first round (both legs) must be completed by Sunday, May 30 with results submitted to David Lockwood at the Examiner Office (01484 437757) no later than first post on Monday, May 31. All competitors will be notified by post along with a copy of the competition rules.
