BRADLEY Park assistant Robert Stansfield called up Fixby’s big guns for the West Yorkshire Alliance at Scarcroft, but local knowledge prevailed with the host club led by professional David Hughes finishing three shots clear of the field.
Stansfield, known to his pals as ‘Bear’ because of his powerful build, teamed with Union champion Richard Broadley, plus one man Andy Shaw and three handicapper Andy Appleyard and carded eight under par 137, a creditable return in that they conceded a shed load of shots to the rest of the field.
Hughes, a former assistant at Scarcroft who returned to the Leeds club to succeed Darren Tear after a spell as professional at Saltburn, hit the shot of the day when he holed a 100 yards wedge second shot to eagle the 17th.
It highlighted a strong finish by the Scarcroft quartet. Hughes birdied the 15th and 16th and two of his team, Phil Docking and Russell Young, both birdied the par five last.

Former Yorkshire champion Adrian Ambler finished in a three-way tie at the top in the final PGA North Region-Mansell Finishes Winter Series at West Lancs but so did Matthew Tottey and it clinched Tottey the order of merit title.
The North Wales professional, also a joint winner with Ambler in the event at Royal Liverpool last month, went into the final tournament with a healthy 109 points lead on Wakefield’s Ambler, a winner in the North Region’s Fairhaven pro-am last week.
Andrew Barnett, another Welshman, tied with Ambler and Tottey, the PGA National Assistants’ champion in 2003 and 2005, on three under par 69.
Woodsome Hall’s John Eyre, whose team placed third, tied 14th on one over par, Fixby’s Paul Carman filled joint 27th place and Willow Valley assistant Lee Shepherd finished on six over to share 37th spot.

DEWSBURY’S new captain Phil Smith, who recently moved into office, is a true all-rounder.
He spent eight years in the Royal Navy, during which he took part in the Navy Field Gun competition at Earls Court, and was involved in rugby for over 40 years, playing his last match at the age of 47.
Phil, who has worked for 30 years in the transport industry, is a fitness fanatic, attending the gym three times a week. That must be a help in taking on those hills at The Pinnacle.
