CHRIS HANSON was just pipped for victory in the Page Trophy by his former caddie Toby Garrett when the Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance’s showpiece competition was staged at Bradley Hall.

The one-handicapper from Crosland Heath had two terrific rounds in this year’s Alliance finale, posting the second best round in the morning with a super 70 (nett) and backing it up with a 72 nett in the afternoon for a 142 total, one shot ahead of Woodsome Hall’s Hanson, who was playing as an independent entry, and Bradley Park’s Barry Martin.

Sixteen-handicapper Martin had a strong morning round, carding a three-under-par 67, and was the hot favourite when he reached the three-quarter mark (27 holes) still four under.

But then disaster struck on the 12th when he found the front face of a bunker and struggled to escape, resulting in an eight.

His afternoon card was further ruined by another eight on the 16th when he went out of bounds on the par five dogleg, to finish with a gross 92.

That gave him a 36-hole total of 143, which looked like winning him the leading amateur prize, until Garrett snatched it away from him and the Page Trophy from Hanson – who had rounds of 71 and 72 to finish six clear of the eight-man professional field.

Garrett was a model of consistency, his morning round highlighted by a birdie two at the 139-yard fourth hole.

And that put him in second place just ahead of last year’s Page Trophy winner Simon Garside and his Heath teammate Oliver Shaw, both of them shooting 71s.

The second time round Garrett’s 72 was matched only by Hanson, Dewsbury’s Adam Crum and Crow Nest Park’s Ben Adamson, and beaten by one player, Adrian Wallis, also from Crosland Heath, with a round of 70 which lifted him into the fourth amateur prize behind Crum (third) and Martin.

Garrett’s performance over 36 holes not only brought him the Page Trophy and £80-worth of vouchers, but went a long way to his team winning the team trophy, alongside Shaw and Luke Pilkington.

As far as the pros were concerned, no-one was able to keep up with Hanson in the afternoon, his Woodsome colleague Dave Astin the closest with a 149 total, ahead of Longley Park’s John Ambler (150).

And that brought the Challenge Tour professional the ‘consolation’ of the Colin Swain Trophy, along with a £125 first prize.

After a successful winter season, the Alliance organisers were able to put forward a prize fund of £725 for the blue riband of their season, and the full list of prizewinners was:
