MELODY LUDI is the new Halifax-Huddersfield Ladies Champion.

The Huddersfield six-handicaper beat Pauline Hazelden of host club Meltham 4&2 in the Ladies Golf Festival final.

Ludi, who had the best gross qualifying score of 83 in a weather-hit competition, defeated Moira Stedman (Meltham) 7&6 in the semi-finals, while Hazelden beat Anne Taylor (Woodsome Hall) 3&2.

They were the top four qualifiers who went straight through because the middle day’s play of the event was washed out.

Organisers are hoping they will attract more entries next year, when the event is being held at West End on August 10, 11 and 12, pointing out there are prizes in two divisions so there’s an opportunity for higher handicap players to take part.

In qualifying at Meltham, the best nett in Division I (for handicaps 0-13) was Diane Proctor (Outlane) 88-13-75, with Rachel Latham (Meltham) second with 90-13-77 (on back 6).

In Division II (handicap 14 and above) Pat Smith (Meltham) was first with 91-18-73 – taking the Marie Fashions Trophy for best nett overall – and Janet Evans (Outlane) second with 94-18-76.

Qualifying scores were:

M Ludi (Hudds) 83, A Taylor (Woodsome Hall) 85, P Hazelden (Meltham) 87, M Stedman (Meltham) 88, D Proctor (Outlane) 88, M Booth (Crosland Heath) 89, R Latham (Meltham) 90, E Taylor (Woodsome Hall) 90, C Proctor (Huddersfield) 92, L Whitwam (Crosland Heath) 93, J Evans (Outlane) 94, S Stedman (Meltham) 95, A Mandl (Bradley Hall) 96, B Parker (Huddersfield) 100, D Mear (Meltham) 100, S Arrowsmith (Woodsome Hall) 101.
