SEVERAL weeks of frozen landscapes have left most golfers kicking their heels and hoping for a few rays of sunshine to help get them back on the fairways.

And the Examiner are proud to announce their own ‘ray of sunshine’ having once again teamed up with Hanson Travel to offer one lucky golfer the chance to win a FREE golfing holiday to Portugal with the launch of the annual Examiner Matchplay Tournament.

Now in its seventh year, the popular knockout, which runs throughout the summer, comes to an exciting finale in September when, this year, Bradley Park Golf Club have agreed to stage the Grand Finals day.

Bradley Park is the first golf club to stage the final twice, the last time was in 2005, when former Huddersfield Matchplay champion Richard Broadley (then playing out of Bradley Hall) won a thriller on the last green to book his place on the holiday, which that year went to Tenerife.

This year, the eventual winner will land a place on the Examiner’s Overseas Challenge holiday which is heading for Vilamoura on Portugal’s Algarve coast.

Once again there will be minor prizes on offer for the runner-up, as well as third and fourth place finishers, but obviously the emphasis is on the first prize of the holiday, which is worth several hundred pounds (but, please note, is non-transferable) and is widely regarded as the highest prize on offer throughout the county.

The competition follows the same format as the last couple of years, with the first round being played on a home and away basis, before the rest of the tournament returns to a straight knockout over one round at the home of the first-named player in the draw.

Two dates which entrants should note is that finals day which be held at Bradley Park on Thursday, September 23, while the prize of the golf holiday to Vilamoura, is for one week, departing on Thursday, November 4. The cost of entry is £25, and the competition is open to anyone with an official handicap (men and ladies) who are over the age of 18.

The closing date for entries is Saturday, March 27, after which the first round draw will be made and published in the Examiner. All entrants will be notified by post, along with competition rules.

Results must be submitted to David Lockwood at the Examiner 01484 437757 by the designated closing date for each round, after which a new draw will be made for each subsequent stage of the competition.

To enter, simply complete the coupon below and send to David Lockwood, accompanied by the entrance fee (cheques made payable to Hanson Travel), at the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Queen Street South, Huddersfield HD1 3DU.
