A SLICE of Spanish sunshine is the exciting reward for this year’s Examiner Matchplay Golf champion.
For the 2011 Tournament winner will be heading to the Costa Blanca in November to join the rest of the members of the Examiner Overseas Challenge, which this year is based in Fuengirola, for a FREE weeks golfing holiday.
This will be the eighth year the Matchplay Tournament has been staged by the Examiner, with sponsorship from Hanson Travel, and this year’s finale will be held at Crosland Heath, who have kindly agreed to host the semi-finals and final, on Thursday, September 22.
Crosland Heath last staged the finals in 2006 when Huddersfield golfer Richard Broadley scored the second of his two consecutive successes.
As in previous years, there will be minor prizes on offer for the runner-up, as well as the third and fourth place finishers, but of course the main prize is the holiday to Spain, which is worth several hundred pounds (please note however, this is not transferable).
The tournament follows a similar format to previous years, with one slight amendment.
To bring the competition in line with other recognised stableford tournaments, and because the Examiner recognise full handicaps rather than three-quarters, etc, the maximum allowed handicap for men this year is 20 – the same as used in the Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance’s Page Trophy competition. The tournament is of course, also open to ladies (for whom the maximum allowance will be 28) and all entrants must be 18 or over.
The first round will again be played over two legs, home and away, before the remainder of the competition reverts to a straight knockout over one round at the home of the first-named player in the draw.
Before entering, competitors are asked to make a special note of both the dates of the final (September 22 at Crosland Heath) and the departure date of the holiday, November 10 (in the event of winning the tournament).
Once again the cost of entering the tournament has been held at £25, and the closing date for entries is Saturday, April 2, after which the draw will be made and published in the Examiner. All entrants will also be notified by post, along with competition rules.
Results should be submitted to David Lockwood, c/o the Sports Department, Tel 01484 437757 by the designated closing date for each round.
