SOME eyebrow raising results in the Halifax/Huddersfield Union warm-up match at Bradley Park in which the juniors beat the first team 3.5-2.5 had manager Chris Mear saying: “I don’t think it will be too long before some of the young lads are knocking on the door of the first team.”

It was pleasing for Mear that there was some “fantastic golf played in trying conditions” – the greens had recently been hollow tined and top dressed, making putting tricky.

There were fine performances by Aaron Schnacke, Brad Tupman and David Stafford, and for the juniors Tom Calvert, Luke Pilkington, and Michael Major, the latter three impressing to the extent that they could soon be in line for first-team places.

The match was played as a fourball match-play, stroke allowances being taken from the lowest handicap player and three-quarters of the difference in handicap being allowed.

In the top match Schnacke and Ben Adamson took on Tom Calvert and Jack Woodhead and with Union champion Schnacke being in irrepressible form, making two eagles and a number of birdies, the seniors ran out easy winners by 7&5.

Results: A Schnacke (Huddersfield) & B Adamson (Crow Nest Park) bt T Calvert (Willow Valley) & J Woodhead (Crosland Heath) 7&5; B Tupman (Huddersfield) & A Walker (Longley Park) halved with L Collier (Crosland Heath) & L Pilkington (Crosland Heath); A Wilford (Huddersfield) & C Ingham (West End) lost to R Joyce (Huddersfield) & M Major (Huddersfield) 5&4; D Stafford (West End) & J Ellison (Huddersfield) lost to J Bailes (Bradley Hall) & J Smith (Halifax) 3&2; M Hepworth (Dewsbury) & M Birkett (Halifax) bt G Bamford (Hebden Bridge) & B Hardcastle (West End) 2&1; B Crowther (Dewsbury) & M Colcombe (Longley Park) lost to B Kaye (Bradley Park) & T Ward (Longley Park) 3&2.
