THE Union’s junior side were unable to finish their season on a high note after losing out to champions Teesside 22-14 in Newton Aycliffe.
Hopes were high after finishing the morning Foursomes all square, but in the afternoon Teesside showed why they are champions with six outright wins, although the visitors did battle hard to gain four halves.
Jamie Smith and Tom Williams had a cracking Foursomes win over Teesside’s top two-ranked players Matty Hayes and Joe Cowper, and Brad Hardcastle and Joe Stott followed up with a 3&1 victory over one-handicapper Steven Burn and Carl Morfoot before the home side struck back to level the match.
Cory Avison and Jon Fleetwood were one-hole winners, but the morning honours ended even when Josh Morton and Josh Bailles were unable to hold Brad Dye and Nat Poole and went down 5&4.
Huddersfield’s Tom Williams joined Brad Hardcastle at the top of the Order of Merit when he scored a 4&3 win over another one-handicapper Andrew Wilson, while Stott, from West End, edged a one hole win over Oak Leaf’s Marcus Hawes, but those were the only Halifax, Huddersfield winners in the Singles as the tide turned in favour of the home side.
Despite a very young and largely-inexperienced team, Halifax, Huddersfield finished fifth in the table with two wins and a draw to their credit, while West End’s Hardcastle and Williams finished with 33 points apiece on top of the Order of Merit, ahead of Halifax’s Jamie Smith on 29.
