CROSLAND Heath claimed their first Halifax, Huddersfield Union Team title in 18 years in winning the Division Two Scratch Championship at Elland.
Bob Wallace, a former Huddersfield Town and Halifax footballer, led the way for the Heath, posting a 69, but he was pipped for the best gross prize by teenager Matthew Colcombe, who also shot 69 and edged Wallace in a card play-off.
Another outstanding effort by Colcombe, the Jubilee Trophy winner as leading junior in last season’s PS Cockroft strokeplay championship, failed to earn Longley Park promotion.
And going up along with Crosland Heath to the Division One event at Dewsbury on June 2 are Elland, Hanging Heaton and Queensbury, who all posted 295 totals, three back from the Heath. Hanging Heaton claimed the runners-up spot on a comparison of cards.
Terry Goldstein, Roger Morris and Michael Lawrie all carded sub 80 rounds behind Wallace, a past Union Seniors champion.

Meanwhile, Fixby teenager Helen Searle was on the heels of the county’s best players as she eased her way into today’s matchplay first round of the Yorkshire Ladies championship at Alwoodley, Leeds.
The England girls’ squad player carded rounds of 78 76 to finish sixth of the 16 who qualified for the knockout stages and this morning she met Charlotte Austwick, from Pike Hills, York.
Sandra Paul, from Fixby, shot 82 84 to miss qualifying by four strokes and Deborah Wood, from Bradley Hall, had a harder time still as she posted 88 91 for 179.
English champion Naomi Edwards, who missed last season’s championship at Fixby due to international duty, fired a brilliant four-under-par 69 in the first round on a day of blue skies and warm sunshine, though a tricky wind tested players on the front nine before it was at their backs to make the homeward run more comfortable.
Edwards, 24, a member of the Curtis Cup side in Oregon two years ago but who has missed selection for this year’s match, is seeking her first Yorkshire win and is seeded to meet Emma Brown, twice the champion, in tomorrow’s final.
Brown (the former Emma Duggleby) shot 72 74 to finish second best qualifier, five shots back from Edwards, who was annoyed with herself for a poor afternoon putting round, though a 72 was under par. She promptly headed for the practice putting green, spending almost an hour there. Brown, too, was unhappy with her putter. She three-putted five times in the second round.
While Edwards made a dozen birdies on the day, Searle found them harder to come by, making two in her first round in which she lost strokes at four holes after the turn, and one fewer in the afternoon.
Qualilfiers: 141 - N Edwards (Ganton) 69 72. 146 - E Brown (Malton & Norton) 72 74. 149 - E Robinson (Middlesbrough) 73 76. 151 - N Dunn (Harrogate) 75 76. 152 - S Garbutt (Ganton) 79 73. 154 - H Searle (Huddersfield) 78 76. 156 - K Crooks (Saltburn) 81 75. 157 - T Batty (Headingley) 76 81. 158 - J Butler (Malton & Norton) 82 76. 159 - O Winning (Rotherham) 80 79. 161 - C Austwick (Pike Hills) 84 77; S Lundy (Cookridge Hall) 81 80;L Harvey (Richmond) 77 84.162 - C Firth (Bingley St Ives) 79 83; E Spurling (Horsforth) 79 83; H Barugh (Pannal) 79 83.

Paul Carman made 33 points and finished well down the field in the Yorkshire PGA pro-am Stableford at Selby.
