Chris Hanson felt he was let down by his putter as he finished one under par in the first round of the Joburg Open.

The 30-year-old golf professional attached to Woodsome Hall fired three birdies and two bogeys on the West Course of the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club in South Africa.

His birdies came at the second, sixth and 16th while he had both bogeys on the outward nine, at holes four and eight.

He Tweeted: “As good as it’s been tee to green in a while, but a below average day on the greens! 70 (-1) #battle #practice.”

Huddersfield-based Hanson is playing in his fourth event as a full European Tour cardholder and will be hoping to make the cut and collect some of the 16.5m Rand on offer.
