Nick Marsh’s season goes from strength to strength.
The English Amateur Champion has just returned from Olton Golf Club where he took the 2014 Midland Open Amateur Championship by five clear shots.
Marsh (pictured) was the only player to shoot under par in the competition, which last year was won by Meltham’s Jamie Bower.
His rounds of 70, 71, 65 and 68 gave him a five-under-par 274 finish. In second place was Nick Watson of Stoke Rochford on level par.
The victory has moved Marsh up to the dizzy heights of 19 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. The only Englishman above him is national Elite Squad teammate Ashley Chesters at number 12. The list is headed by an American with the unpronounceable name of Oliver Schniederjans.
Before this result, Marsh was listed as number three in the England Amateur Order of Merit. This win will surely propel him above Southport and Ainsdale’s Paul Howard and into second place, again behind Hawkstone Park’s Chesters, who has an unassailable 5,000-point lead.
Jamie Bower is currently in 22nd position.
At the end of last month Marsh won the English Amateur Championship at Saunton, north Devon, after beating Scott Gregory 2&1 in a blustery final.
He is now practising for Qualifying School for the European Tour at Frilford Heath at the end of September and will make a decision on his future based on his performance.
One factor at the back of his mind will surely be the 2015 Walker Cup. He just missed out on selection in 2013 and would miss out again if he turns pro at the end of this season.
