Rob Booth has retained the Yorkshire PGA Classic.

The Crosland Moor-based player shot three under par to beat 60 other professionals to hold on to the title he won last year and claim the £1,500 first prize.

The competition was shortened to 14 holes due to poor weather.

This is the latest in a string of excellent results for Booth, who currently lies second in the Yorkshire PGA Order of Merit and tied third in the England and Wales PGA (North) OOM.

He has achieved the remarkable feat of playing in 18 events this season and being in the prize money every time, finishing no lower than sixth.

He attributes his success to his new part-time job.

Seven weeks ago Booth, 30, who lives at Outlane, joined coach Crosland Heath’s Richard Lambert as the club’s assistant professional.

Since then he has spent four days a week helping in the shop and giving lessons to members as well as players from other clubs, and three days a week on tour.

He said: “I am having a great season and I feel confident I can win the Yorkshire Order of Merit and finish in the top three of the PGA North.

“This would qualify me for next year’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, which is my target.

“Since I started at Crosland Heath, I have a different mindset. I think the successes have come because I’m so much more relaxed.

“I am really enjoying the shop, teaching the members and being part of the club; the members are great.

“ I don’t feel there is any pressure on me and that is helping my game, and Richard has been great, he is flexible about my three days off so I can play the tournaments.

“Now I really look forward to them, I’m having more fun and it’s been all guns blazing for me. If I miss a putt, it’s not the end of the world, but that attitude has actually had a positive effect on my game. “I always knew I could do it and now my results are proving that I can.

“I feel my game is pretty much there. My strength is my wedge play and driving and now it’s a question of working with Richard to maintain the standard, and keeping my game compact.”

There are seven more events in the PGA schedules and Booth can’t wait: “The way I’m playing, I’m really excited about them”.

He is now looking forward to the Leeds Cup at Moortown on July 29 and 30.
