Curtis Cup selection Rochelle Morris has set a new course record at Huddersfield Golf Club.

The 20-year-old from Woodsome Hall fired a 68 in the second round of qualifying at the Yorkshire Ladies Golf Championship.

Morris progressed to the semi-finals – as did holder and home club member Megan Lockett – but both were beaten at that stage.

The Woodsome player, a former Yorkshire champion herself, has been picked to represent Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup matches against the USA next month.

At Fixby, the 16 qualifiers included Morris and Lockett along with locals Hannah Holden, Megan Clarke, Melissa Wood and 14-year-old Charlotte Heath.

Woodsome girls Morris and Wood secured victories, with Morris beating Georgina Hirst from Flamborough Head 5&3.

Wood played Cleakheaton’s Megan Clarke, winning one up.

Charlotte Heath, from the home club, produced a stunning performance, beating the more experienced Jennifer Hide from Richmond 5&3. Heath is definately looking a star of the future.

Holden had an easy victory against Sophie Olley from Moortown (6&4) while Lockett won through with a 1up victory over Abigail Smee.

The last eight produced more stunning golf, with Morris taking her match 6&5 over the vastly less-experienced Heath.

Emma Brown from Malton and Norton had previous England experience to draw on and took her match from Lightcliffe’s Holden 1up.

Lockett moved through easily with a 4&3 win over Woodsome’s Wood. Megan Garland snatched a win from Ellie Goodall of Selby.

The final four took to a course in beautiful condition, but Morris lost to Brown on the 19th, the first extra hole, despite having been in the ascendancy for much of the match.

Defending champion Lockett then lost on the 24th hole after an epic battle against Garland.

The final was won by Garland, 3up against Brown – a tricky win given Brown is Garland’s boss.
