DEFEATS in the top five singles proved too big a mountain to climb for Halifax, Huddersfield and they went down 20-16 to Sheffield in their Yorkshire Junior Inter-Union League match at Meltham.

Hopes were high when they shared the morning foursomes with the league favourites but then came shattering defeats for Sam Bridges, Ryan Greenwood, Matthew Colcombe, Joe Hill and Jamie Bower.

Bridges and Greenwood scored an impressive foursomes win against Yorkshire Under 16 champion, Tom Thornhill, and Dominic Moon and defeats for the Colcombe-Hill, Bower-Mark Hepworth and George Bamford-Adam Cryer combinations were repaired by Ben Adamson and Nathan Scott and Michael Lawrie and Stephen Pullen making it all to play for.

The singles told a sad story though the damage was limited with Cryer, Bamford, Scott and Adamson battling for victories, though when Lawrie and Hepworth went down it was Sheffield’s day, Pullen’s last hole win merely reducing the margin.

Title holder Matthew Colcombe will meet surprise packet Lewis Howell in the semi-finals of the Halifax, Huddersfield Junior Matchplay championship and again will have home advantage at Longley Park on Monday week.

While Colcombe advanced by 3&1 against Crosland Heath’s Michael Lawrie, Willow Valley’s Howell upset Crow Nest Park’s Ben Adamson, the top seed as winner of the strokeplay championship, by one hole.

Shocks also came with the defeats of Ryan Greenwood and Sam Bridges. The fancied West End pair went out by one hole and 2&1 respectively to Elland’s Nicolas Marsh and Longley Park’s John Doherty.

Marsh and Doherty also battle at Longley Park for a final place at Ogden on August 31, starting out behind Colcombe and Howell.
