West End’s Steve Martin won the Union’s prestigious PS Cockcroft Trophy, clinching the title with a narrow one-shot margin.

Martin came through from 13th position, having shot a 76 gross in the first round at Huddersfield, where the CSS was 74.

It was a highly impressive second round of 68 which took him to the top of the leaderboard on 144, just one shot clear of home players Aaron Schnacke (73, 72)and Brad Tupman (68, 77).

Tupman finished third on a countback, but had looked like the favourite after his first round of 68.

Best junior gross score was posted by Huddersfield’s Josh Morton, which is currently enjoying an excellent season.

He shot 73 in both rounds for a 146 final result to take the Jubilee Trophy.

The top 32 players now go forward to the Matchplay Championship to compete for the John Crawshaw Trophy.
