HUDDERSFIELD Dragons Men’s first team finally managed to break their duck for the season when claiming a well-deserved 2-1 victory against Leeds II.

After so many defeats, Dragons were fired up to bag their first win and, right from the start, they dominated the first half, but without any goal success.

Following words of encouragement from the captain at half time, Dragons were finally able to break the deadlock after a great run by Simon Courtney was finished off by lobbing the ball over the keeper.

However, with Leeds frustration building, they managed to break away and force an equaliser.

But Huddersfield were not going to be denied, and they hit back almost straight away with a crashing goal from Pete Lee to seal a more-than-welcome victory.

Huddersfield III 3 Halifax II 0

DRAGONS Thirds travelled to Halifax with a team shorn of several players through illness, family and Christmas commitments elsewhere.

They had to rely on players from the Fourths, despite them having just finished a hard inter-club game.

Despite all of the above, Huddersfield started strongly, in particular Kullar and Kelly who made life very uncomfortable for a static Halifax defence.

And it was just reward when Kullar jinked his way through from the top of the D to finish a fine solo goal after 20 minutes.

Halifax occasionally looked dangerous on the break and MacCallum, in goal, made a string of excellent saves from shots at both point-blank range and with diving interceptions at the top of the D.

Huddersfield continued to control play in the second half, Kullar getting the slightest of touches on a cross for his second to take the game beyond a flagging Halifax team.

The victory margin was increased with 10 minutes left as an excellent run and cross by Kelly was turned in at the far post by Kullar to complete his hat trick.

Credit should go to Luke Raddon, who ran himself to a standstill in midfield, and Pritchard who made some trademark crunching tackles.

Huddersfield IV 2 Huddersfield V 0

AFTER another enforced two-week lay-off due to Lockwood Park being frozen, Dragons Fifths resumed their campaign against the top-of-the-table Fourths, wondering if they could maintain their record of one win and two draws against the same opponents over the last two seasons.

The Fourths enjoyed more of the possession, but the Fifths created most of the clearest chances.

The Fourths were always going to come out hard at the start of the second half and, sure enough, they soon forced a short corner and, with Carl Bland off the pitch due to a pulled hamstring, Foo received the ball and dispatched a powerful flick waist-high into the corner.

This was probably the decisive moment in the match, although the Fifths continued to battle, with Martin Laithwaite and Jerry Turner prominent, along with youngsters Max Bowden, Olly Moorhouse and Sam Hannam, who all made their mark against higher-ranked opponents.

From another short corner Foo showed he has lost none of his skills, unleashing a thunderbolt into the opposite corner.

But despite defeat, the Fifths could hold their heads up high after giving their opponents a real run for their money.

Dragons Ladies I 1 Chapeltown 1

HUDDERSFIELD were unlucky not to take away three points after a terrific team performance.

Chapeltown had the majority of pressure in the first 10 minutes and had consecutive short corners, but some great defending prevented them from taking a lead before Dragons got into the flow of the game in an even first half.

Huddersfield didn’t let up in the second half and from a short corner captain Kelly Fillingham collected the ball from the top of the D and fired into the back of the net.

The game continued to be very even but Chapeltown then got a piece of luck when the ball bobbled over the line into the Huddersfield net to gift them an equaliser.

Dragons kept troubling the Chapeltown defence and were disappointed to be denied what seemed to them a clear penalty flick.

They kept going until the end trying for a second, without success, but go into the Christmas break reassured by a great team performance.

Bridlington Ladies I 0

HUDDERSFIELD finally got to play their long-awaited game against Bridlington, who had beaten the Dragons at the beginning of the season and were thinking they were in for an easy three points.

But Bridlington had no answer to the determination and teamwork put in by all the players, particularly in midfield where they were given no room and nowhere to go.

Dragons scored twice, while at the other end Rachel Bailey was solid in defence.
