HOLMFIRTH HARRIERS’ track and field athletes won four medals at the Yorkshire Championships held at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Barnsley.

The event is the opening Championship meeting of the summer and in the Under 13 boys Seth Calvert-Green won his heat in the 100m in 14.19secs.

In the final he produced another strong performance to take the silver medal.

Calvert-Green just missed a medal in the long jump being placed fourth with a 4.11m effort.

Jimmy Burke finished fourth in heat two of the Under 13 boys 800m with a time of 2 minutes 35.12 seconds.

There was another medal winning performance in the Under 15 girls 1500m race where Olivia Sykes took silver in a very competitive race in a time of 4.57.65secs.

Daisy-Mae Smith finished 12th place in the same race with a time of 6.05.05secs.

In the Under 15 boys Aaron Kettlewell continues his dominance of the long jump with a 5.38 metre gold medal winning leap.

Kettlewell also recorded 2.21.35 to finish sixth in heat two of the 800m and another of Holmfirth’s talented youngsters George Orton just missed out on a medal in the 80m Hurdles finishing fourth in 13.63secs.

In the Under 17 women, Ruby Sykes was eighth in heat two of the 800m in 2.33.59, while Sophie Spencer was 14th in the 1500m in 5.14.12.

In the Seniors Lauren Storr was fourth in the 100m hurdles final in 16.16, while Claire Leaver was 10th in the 1500m with a season’s best of 5.06.24.

Max Kaye took the gold medal in the Under 20 men’s 800m in a very tight finish on a time of 1.58.60secs. Kaye then went on to finish fourth in the 1500m in a slow tactical race.

In the men’s 5000m there was a clash between the old stalwart of Holmfirth’s team, Dave Watson, and the up and coming Richard Smith.

It was Watson who was first to finish in fifth in 15.38.36 with Smith knocking 27 seconds off his personal best in sixth place in a time of 15.51.81secs.

The only Holmfirth Harrier to compete in the Beverley 10K Road Race, which incorporated the Yorkshire Veterans AA Championship was Tim Cock who was second in the Over 70 section in a time of 51.29.
