The mixed doubles final at the Fruitypot Huddersfield Open has a distinctly home-grown feel about it.

Huddersfield club coach Paul Jepson is through to the Edgerton showpiece with partner Gillian Kilner, who plays at Huddersfield and coaches at Holmfirth Tennis Club.

They will be up against the home-club pairing of Darya Osadova and Matthew Wren on Friday night.

In the round-robin qualifiers Jepson and Kilner defeated Harry Boothby and Phoebe Suthers, along with Jacob Chadwick and Charlotte Margetson.

Wren and Osadova beat the pairings of Sam Roberts and Emma Wardle and Jamie McCormick and Lucy Margetson.

Playing in the tournament are Latvian sisters Hardija and Kristela Vidnere.

They are from the Heaton club in Bradford but are being coached by Carrie Wagstaffe, who plays Aegon National Club League tennis for Huddersfield.

Hardija has been presented with the Performance of the Week Award from last year’s tournament, when she went all the way through from the first round to win the 16 and Under Girls title.

The 14 and Under Boys title has gone to Samuel Reeve of Bramall Lane, the No1 seed, but he needed a match tie-break to defeat No4 seed Adam Bolchover.

The score was 4-6 6-4 10-5.

The Girls crown in that age-group went to Savannah Dada-Mascoll, the No2 seed from Ilkley, who beat Thongsbridge player Mollie Skelton 6-1 6-2.

Skelton had previously knocked out the No1 seed Melanie Griffiths.

The singles semi-finals are planned for Friday night, followed by the mixed doubles final, while the singles finals will be played at 11.30am on Saturday, followed by the men’s doubles final.
