Trainer Chris Aston has welcomed news that Huddersfield boxer Tyrone Nurse is to fight for the British light-welterweight title.

The 24-year-old English 10st champion will face the winner of this month’s title showdown between holder Curtis Woodhouse and Scotsman Willie Limond in Glasgow.

Nurse was due to have faced Bradley Saunders in a final eliminator.

But he has been made the mandatory challenger after the WBO intercontinental champion from Sedgefield withdrew.

It’s envisaged a clash with Yorkshireman Woodhouse or Commonwealth champion LImond will take place in Leeds or Manchester in September or October.

Nurse, beaten just one in 30 bouts, aims to become only the third British champion from Huddersfield.

Cruiserweight Mark Hobson – like Nurse, trained by Aston – and light-middleweight Prince Rodney both won Lonsdale belts outright after making two successful defences, the former in 2004 and the latter in 1985.

Nurse and Aston will be in the crowd when Woodhouse takes on Limond in his first defence on June 27.

Saunders is set to appear on the undercard of the big heavyweight rematch between Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury in Manchester on July 26.

That bill will also feature Dewsbury fighter Gary Sykes’ British super-featherweight title defence against Norfolk’s Liam Walsh.

Aston said of the Nurse development: “We were more than ready to face Bradley Saunders and optimistic on our chances.

“That fight’s not going to happen now, but I don’t think anyone can deny Tyrone this opportunity.

“He has done things in a sensible way and got to where he has by hard work.

“He’s had more than a few setbacks which have been none of his doing, so he deserves a break or two.

“We were always planning to take in the Woodhouse-Limond fight, and it has even more spice now.

“They are both tough fighters, but Tyrone is getting stringer and slicker, and at 24, he has time on his side.”
