Tyrone Nurse will take the high road on Friday to see first hand the heights he will have to reach to land the British and Commonwealth ligh-welterweight titles.

The Huddersfield ace has been mandated to face the winner of the eagerly-awaited showdown between reigning British champion Curtis Woodhouse and Commonwealth king Willie Limond.

The big fight is on the same Glasgow Braehead Arena bill as Ricky Burns’ WBC lightweight title eliminator against unbeaten Montenegrin Dejan Zlaticanin.

Nurse, 24 years old and beaten just once in 31 professional fights, has been a regular sparring partner of Scotsman Burns down the years, so knows the journey to Glasgow well.

He’ll be accompanied by trainer Chris Aston, who believes Woodhouse, the Driffield-based former professional footballer, will just have the edge against Limond.

“It’s a tight one, but if pushed, I’ll say Curtis will win because of his recent fights and form,” said Aston.

“Willie is very good technically, and clever boxer who is certainly a handful for anyone, but I think Curtis has that bit of strength which will be telling.”

The winner will face Nurse, the reigning English champion, in September or October.

And Aston, who trained Huddersfield star Mark Hobson to the British cruiserweight title, added: “Tyrone will be happy to take on either of them.

“The main thing is that the fight has been mandated.

“Some people have said Tyrone is underrated. I say he’s been avoided.”
