Huddersfield boxer Tyrone Nurse’s British light-welterweight championship bout against Chris Jenkins ended in stalemate – meaning the title remains vacant.

Promoter Eddie Hearn is talking about a rematch after two of the three judges were unable to separate the pair after the 12-round Manchester showdown.

The other judge, Howard Foster, had Nurse a 117-112 winner over Jenkins, from Swansea, and the Yorkshireman said: “I thought I nicked it down the stretch.”

Nurse, 25, for whom it was the first draw in a 34-bout career (31 wins) is the more experienced of the pair, although Jenkins went into the clash unbeaten in bus 16 professional fights.

The 26-year-old Welshman edged the opening round, throwing left jabs with accuracy if not massive power.

But Nurse, aiming to become the third Huddersfield boxer to win a British title after Mark Hobson and Prince Rodney, got his bearings, and began to count with his right hand.

Jenkins was caught on the counter several times in the third round, and at the end of the fourth, had a cut around his left eye.

After a close fifth, Nurse had a bump under his right eye, giving Jenkins some encouragement, and the bout remained in the balance at the halfway point,

Jenkins, still dangerous with his left, came off worse in a clash of heads in the ninth, and Nurse began to take control.

Both men dug deep, and even though Nurse thought he had done enough, the final outcome was a majority draw.
