HUDDERSFIELD badminton coach Hayley Smith has guided Yorkshire Under 13s to the national badminton title.
In a competition that included 29 other counties, they came out on top to take gold in the finals in Walsall, with the team comprising Gregg Dawson, Jay Rathi, William Howse, Harry Walker and Harry Wright, twins Sian and Helen Kelly, twins Beth and Abbie Speechley and Hannah Boden.
After being unbeaten in their 12 matches over the season, they were in the top eight teams who qualified to compete in the finals.
In their first game they faced Sussex and were 3-1 down early on but fought back to 6-6 going into the doubles and ran out 11-9 winners.
Yorkshire then faced Surrey and had a much more comfortable ride to win convincingly 16-4.
In the final they faced Warwickshire in what was a really close contest with four of the games finishing 21-20, one 21-19 and another 21-18.
Testament to Yorkshire grit, the players fought hard and they took the gold with a 15-5 scoreline.
Coach Smith is holding an open tournament in Huddersfield Sports Centre on Saturday, June 29 and anyone wanting to take part can contact Hayley Smith on 07921 311002.
