HUDDERSFIELD show jumper William Whitaker won the Bunn Leisure Derby Tankard at the Hickstead Derby on a ride he’s had for just under a year.

The 22-year-old, who is on the British Equestrian Federation’s World Class development programme, was riding the nine-year-old dark bay gelding Fandango III, owned by Miss Fredlund.

Nine riders took part in the jump off with five recording clear rounds with the Whitaker and Fernando III finishing almost a clear second ahead of their nearest rival.

“It’s always fantastic to win at Hickstead,” said Whitaker .

“Fandango III has a lot of potential and all the assets to go a long way.

“It was my first time jumping here since the upgrade work – I thought the arena was good before but it’s fantastic now.”
