THE Huddersfield Table Tennis League are planning two special events to celebrate their 80th Anniversary.

In April the Closed Championships will have a special section for former players.

Anyone who has played in the League, but is not currently registered, is encouraged to contact any official to register their interest.

The annual dinner in June will also strongly reflect on the League’s 80-year history with special presentations throughout the evening.

Former players who have contributed to the League’s past will be made welcome and are urged to make contact soon.

The festive break has allowed some teams to catch up on outstanding fixtures and one of these saw second division Marsh D’s unbeaten record come to an end at Woodfield Park B.

The Police side swept into a 4-0 lead with Andy Sansom surprisingly beating Steve Martin in the opener by 3-1.

Derek Moorhouse then beat David Taylor 3-0 and Mike Belk had a similar victory over Steve Dunn.

Moorhouse returned to the table to inflict further discomfort on Steve Martin again in three straight sets.

The doubles stopped the rot with the Martin and Dunn combination overcoming Sansom and Belk 3-1.

In a contest with some strange results, Sansom then lost in three straight to Steve Dunn to make the score 4-2.

Belk beat Taylor and Moorhouse completed his 100 per cent with a comfortable win over Dunn to secure victory at 6-2.

Marsh gained some valuable late points with wins from Martin over Belk and Taylor over Sansom.

Woodfield Park’s A team travelled to Kingsmith A and finished all square at 5-5.

Ian MacLean was undefeated for the visitors, while Janet Adams and Geoff Dunne both won twice for Kingsmith.

In Division III Marsh Con E have fallen behind with their fixtures due to a combination of work commitments and injury, but travelled to Wilshaw B last week.

Unfortunately late withdrawals on each side meant the match was played with two per team – father and son Adrian and Tom Normanton were up against Gary Jepson and John Vaughan.

The outcome hinged on the doubles which was won in four games by Wilshaw, but the match of the contest paired Adrian with John Vaughan and it couldn’t have been closer – Vaughan took the first 11-9, lost the next two 11-13, 14-16 before taking the fourth 13-11.

Three loose points at the end of the deciding fifth set gave the match to Normanton 11-8 – Wilshaw finished winners by 5-4.

With several games still outstanding, the Management Committee will have some key decisions to take when they meet next Tuesday.
