HUDDERSFIELD Veterans Second team have got off to a promising start to the new Yorkshire League season.

Following on from their highly creditable draw away to Leeds II, they beat a strong Bradford II side 7-3.

Ian Tweedale was in top form winning all three matches and joining David Wood to win the doubles.

It didn’t look too promising in the early stages as Bradford won three of the first four matches, but victory in a close doubles, which went to a deciding fifth set, proved the catalyst for Huddersfield to take the next five singles and run out winners.

Wood won two and Keith Skarz one. For Bradford, Geoff Dunne, who plays with Kingsmith A, was beaten only by Tweedale.

This coming weekend it’s the start of the First Division series of all-day competition in which teams play three matches. Huddersfield have a strong squad headed by skipper Janet Adams.

She welcomes back Tim Dyson after a year ‘s absence and they are joined by Russell Senior, Mark Pugh and Tweedale.

The venue is the Heckmondwike Table Tennis Centre and with the cream of Yorkshire table tennis on parade it should be well worth seeing.
