IAN MITCHELL is the new president of Longwood Harriers – the 18th holder of this position since the club was founded in 1888.

Mitchell, from Netherton, was formerly Head of PE at Moor End High School before retirement.

He joined Longwood in 1984 and has served on the committee for many years, holding the offices of general secretary, membership secretary and club captain.

He was also formerly the secretary of Kirklees Schools’ Athletics Association.

Longwood Harriers celebrate their 125th Anniversary next year, and there are a number of events planned during the 12 months, culminating in a formal dinner at Greenhead Masonic Hall on November 9.

The club, which for many years has been based at Leeds Road Playing Fields, covers all the athletic disciplines, and has the use of Huddersfield's only synthetic track.

Mitchell said: “Our aim is to continue to develop and maintain the growing junior section to eventually blend in with our excellent Veterans’ section.”

Longwood’s long and illustrious history includes former World Mile record holder, Derek Ibbotson, Great Britain 800m runner Martin Steele, and European Cross Country medal winner Andrew Pearson.

“These are the local athletes that we hope will inspire today’s youngsters to excel,” said Mitchell.
