NINE players form the Kirklees Independent badminton social club started the first leg of their 2012 road trip to play the Badminton England Bonanza.

The Cashin crew of Michael, Elaine, Rob and Bev, along with Anthony Gray, Hamza Raouf, Latika Rodway-Anand, Rosina Costello and coach Hayley Smith went to the Liverpool Echo Arena.

Smith said: “It was brilliant, there are not many national competitions for general social and club players, so the Bonanzas are great.

“We decided we needed a 2012 tour, so as a first stop this was not only great fun, but motivational for all that participated.”

Next stop is the Kirklees Active Leisure games at Whitcliffe Mount on June 23, followed by the Birmingham Bonanza the following day.

At Liverpool the team took part in the men’s and ladies singles, and both level and mixed doubles.

There were trophies for the Cashin ladies, as Bev Cashin took the social ladies singles, having a final nail-biting showdown with her mother Elaine Cashin.

Hayley Smith took the ladies Singles Club category, also winning a service challenge and crazy catch rebound competition.

Latika Rodway-Anand took runner-up in the Under 16 girls bronze singles, and then paired with Rosina Costello to win the Under 16 girls doubles.

The men’s singles were very tough and although there were no podium results, the game play was exceptional.

Raouf and Gray battled hard with rallies lasting ages, but were unable to win through.

Father and son Cashins had the opening honours as first up men’s doubles, but unfortunately didn’t get out of their table so no podium for them either.
