JAKE NEWTON struck gold to lead Kirkburton to an impressive medal haul at the British Institute of Karate open championships in Chesham.

He topped the boys 10 years kata (moves) category, with Anna Shaw and Trinity Thornton joint third in the girls section.

Jodie Booth claimed silver in the ladies kumite (fighting) and bronze in the kata.

Chris Gillings, competing in the men’s cadet section, claimed a silver medal in the kata and bronze in the kumite.

Tom Kaye took bronze in the men’s kata with instructor Colin Hanson saying: “It’s been one of our best years yet.”
