HUDDERSFIELD’S Mike Tolman scooped all three senior men’s tennis titles in the Sellers International.

The 28-year-old company director from Honley, the No1 seed, regained the title he won in 2010 when beating No2 seed Phil Whalley (Lancs) 6-0 6-4 in the Singles final at Edgerton.

They then teamed up to win the Doubles, beating Batley pairing Peter Heath and Steve Shipley 6-4 6-0, before Tolman and playing partner Caroline Mount grabbed the Mixed title 6-3 6-3 against Thongsbridge duo Andrew and Kim Atkinson.

It was a fine achievement for Tolman and he beat off competition from some of the up-and-coming junior players to take the Performance of the Week Trophy.

There was consolation following the Mixed defeat for Kim Atkinson, who took the Ladies Singles title 7-5 6-4 against Thongsbridge teammate Holly Horsfall (No2 seed beating No1).

Horsfall, from Hepworth, took the title in her age section, however, winning the 14 and Under Girls crown with a 6-3 6-1 victory against Louie McClelland from North Scotland.

The Ladies Doubles was an all-Huddersfield club final, with Victoria Cran and Caroline Mount beating Charlotte Bradshaw and Charlotte Kershaw 6-4 6-1.

Competition was strong in the younger age groups and the 8 and Under Mixed title went to Dominic Veseley of Thongsbridge.

His brother, Oliver, won the 9 and Under Boys section, beating Seb Camatcho (Chester) 7-6 7-3 in the final (played over tie-breaks).

Jessica Dawson from Sheffield took the 9 and Under Girls title, beating Thongsbridge player Orla Cooper 7-3 3-7 7-4.

Rhona Cook from Wrexham won the 10 and Under Girls 5-3 5-3 against Marni Banks, while Peter Alam from Bolton took the Boys title in that age group, beating Luca McManus, a qualifier from Dorset who was also nominated for the top performance award.

At 12 and Under, Rachael Greenwood (South Ribble) beat No1 seed Shanice Marshall-Sefia (Bedford) 6-4 6-4 to take the silverware, while Cameron Bowie (Barton Park, Scotland) won the Boys, beating Boris Ivanyuzhenkov 6-4 6-1.

Following Horsfall’s success in the Girls, Ross Watson of South Ribble won the 14 Boys, beating Josh Webster of Manchester 6-4 6-1.

Maria Pandya (Solihull) won the 16 Girls title when beating Sophie Dodds (Harrogate) 6-3 6-1, while the Boys at that level was won by the top see, Ben Clarke from Cambridge, who defeated Thongsbridge’s Andrew Atkinson (No2 seed) 7-5 6-1.

There was area success in the 18 Girls, however, when Kim Atkinson beat Lancashire’s Beth Coton 7-6 6-3. In the Boys, it was an all-Holcombe Brook final with Alec Foote (No2) beating Ben Crichton 4-6 6-4 10 2 (match tie-break).

Becky Lee, head coach at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, said the team behind the scenes at Edgerton had worked miracles to get everything finished on time despite dreadful weather.

“The standard of play was very good yet again this year and, considering the weather, everyone involved in staging the tournament worked superbly to make sure matches were completed every day,” said the LTA Level 4 Senior Performance Coach.

“There was a massive effort from everyone behind the scenes and the players produced some really good tennis, with Mike Tolman the pick with all three titles.

“The young age-groups were excellent, too. There were 43 in the 9 and Under Boys, the most I can ever remember, and 24 in the Girls, so that just shows what fantastic interest there is in the game and the fact that more kids are playing tennis.”
