ELF Renault Clio Cup rookie Daniel Lloyd had hopes of a potential top-10 finish in round six at Donington evaporate when drying track conditions rendered his wet-weather tyres a hindrance rather than a help.

With tyre choice proving to be crucial to the outcome for each of the 24 drivers, 17-year-old Lloyd, from Scammonden (above), was one of those who lost out when the circuit dried faster than had been expected, and meant the competitors running treaded rubber were placed firmly on the back foot.

After a bright start, Lloyd dropped to 20th as the track dried, but a determined effort enabled him to gain three spots before the finish – the four points achieved for 17th place proving crucial in his bid to remain in touch with the top 10.

“We’re really disappointed with the race as we shouldn’t have gone on wet tyres. Slicks – or at least a mixture of slicks and wets – were the way to go,” said Lloyd.
