HUDDERSFIELD Falcons had mixed fortunes at the Yeadon-Guiseley club’s Centre Team Trial and Stelvio Trophy Trial – but the ride of the day came from 12-year-old William Tolson.

Tolson, who had celebrated his birthday just a week before, rode the full adult course winning his Class C age group.

Tolson (pictured below), who is a Colne Valley High School student, has just recovered from a broken elbow injured doing gymnastics at his school.

So it has been a race against time for him to get fit for the British Youth Championships which started in Devon last month.

Judging by his fine performance Tolson over the Cockhill Mines course in North Yorkshire, he is back on track and aiming to beat his father Chris this season.

The weather forecast was right on the button for the Yeadon-Guiseley club’s event, with rain, hail and a chilling easterly wind hitting the riders on the course above Pateley Bridge.

Haworth trials expert Dan Clark shrugged off the horrendous conditions to win the West Yorkshire Championship trial and the Stelvio Trophy came as a bonus.

The team victory went to the trio of Dan Thorpe, Chris and Tim Pearson as 17 club teams started but only six teams survived.

It was hard going and Huddersfield Falcon lost David Morley and Martin Greenwood to the conditions during the trial.

Ben Robinson, Anthony Cooper and Simon Tyas got the Falcons home in sixth place on the hard course route, while Ian Haigh, Chris Tolson and William Wood took fifth place in the clubman class with club colleagues Richard Armson, Oliver Fortune and Richard Beever close behind.
