The 19-year-old from Brockholes was overtaking the leader, Martin Glossop, on the final bend and looking set for a win in the Relentless British 125GP Championship.

But he was forced to coast over the line in second when the juice ran out and he’s now hoping for better luck at Thruxton this weekend.

“I felt a bit gutted because I reckon if I had made it to the line I would have had my second win,” said the chemistry student from the University of Manchester.

“On the other hand, though, I was very lucky because if it had cut out half a lap earlier I wouldn’t have finished and that would have lost me solid points and a podium finish.

“I’m now second in the championship and hope to have a tad more luck at Thruxton this weekend.”

Lodge, whose three uncles run Earnshaws Motorcycles and whose grandfather, Edward, is the former Town director who founded the Lodges supermarket chain, had a battle royal with teammate Glossop in the rain-hit event at Donington.

Having started on dry tyres despite the threat of rain, the leading riders were eventually forced to hold up their hands and stop the race when heavy rain arrived.

As Lodge was second at the time, he was second on the grid for the re-start (which was of seven laps) and he was never out of the top three.

Lodge held the lead several times as he, Glossop and third-placed Brian Clark went for glory at the head of the field. He was second at the last bend, but Glossop went wide and Lodge would have won but for the fuel cut-out.
