Netherton racer Josh Caygill is closing in on the top five in the Audi Sport TT Cup Championship.

Caygill closed in on the top five with a sixth place finish in the first race of penultimate event of the 2015 season at Germany’s Nurburgring.

His points return from the Nurburgring left the 26-year-old sixth in the rankings with 96 points – 9.5 points shy of fifth in the standings – ahead going into the finale at Hockenheim in Germany over the weekend October 17-18.

“We had good pace again at the Nurburgring, free practice went well and, although I was a bit disappointed with qualifying, it wasn’t too bad”, said Caygill.

“If I’d put all my best sectors together, we could have been on for a top three start for the first race but to finish sixth in the race and get points was good.”

From the fourth row of the grid for the second race, the former motorcycle racer maintained eighth position during an early Safety Car period before climbing into seventh place on lap five and then moving into the top six on the subsequent tour.

His progress was short lived, though, when race officials served Caygill with a contentious drive-through penalty linked to the positioning of his Audi at the start of the race.

He fought his way back having been dropped to the back of the field and he eventually ended the race 16th overall.

“I think it was pretty harsh as it wasn’t like I was gaining anything,” said Caygill.

“It was frustrating really as we could have ended the meeting in the championship top five without that.”
