TOM SYKES is a potential World Superbike champion in the making!
That’s the view of former British and World Superbike racer Jamie Whitham, who now co-owns Crosland Moor airfield.
“Tom is still travelling on an upward curve in his career. I see great potential in the lad, he is simply a very, very good racer. He doesn’t crash a lot and has got that Suzuki working really well for him,” said Whitham
“At Mallory Park, he was on the fastest bike but the clutch problems clearly had an impact because he was posting fastest lap times all over the place.
“He is long overdue a victory and I expect him to get a couple of race wins under his belt before the season is out.”
Sykes is the No1 rider at Rizla Suzuki, ahead of Japanese newcomer Atsushi Watanabe, and Whitham added: “It’s not easy carrying the hopes and ambitions of a team on your shoulders at such a young age, but he’s a tough, determined lad.
“Tom’s got the full factory effort behind him, and with that you are talking about millions of pounds involved.
“But the lad has got everything going for him.
“He hides behind his grin which has earned him the nickname – The Grinner – but actually, he is a very intelligent lad and has worked hard with his team to get his bike just to his liking.
“He’ll be relishing the fact that he has such a professional factory team behind him – he’ll have two or three guys just to deal with the electronics – and I’m backing him to be up there for a long while to come.”
