LINDLEY’S Fiona Hughes made her debut in the Olympics at the Winter Games in February.

Hughes was in the Great Britain team for the cross-country skiing at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games and she placed 68th in the 10km individual freestyle.

Hughes, who won her first European Junior Championship event in 2009, celebrated her 20th birthday shortly after the closing ceremony.

A quartet of local athletes headed for New Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in September.

For 20-year-old swimmer Kate Hutchinson, the Loughborough student who hails from Dewsbury, the Indian adventure brought a first international final in the 200m medley where she finished in eighth place.

There was disappointment for 23-year-old Cleckheaton hammer thrower Sarah Holt who, after a season hit by illness and a back injury, fell short of her personal best and didn’t manage to reach the final, and in the men’s hammer event 22-year-old Huddersfield University student Matthew Lambley managed to make the cut for the final but had to be content with 10th place.

And Dewsbury pole vaulter went out to the sub-continent wearing the colours of Scotland.
