THE vagaries of email and how some people use it is a constant source of amazement and amusement to me.
As in many media offices, Examiner Sport is obviously a target for a number of press officers pushing their wares and we regularly receive updates from the national rowing squad, the Great Britain handball team and a variety of similarly less than mainstream sports.
Obviously these rarely see the light of day (although Examiner readers seeking to see a change in this editorial policy can contact me on the above email address), but far more intriguing is the weekly report we receive from the Oklahoma State University basketball team.
While I can understand any sporting organisation in the UK sending information to the Examiner sports desk – if Sport England are doing their job then this should ever be the case – but to be contacted by a student team in Oklahoma, who are obviously hopeful of getting their news into the Examiner, is a little left field (or is that left court in basketball?).
A quick run through the contact addresses on the email shows that we are in such good company as Dirk Lineberger, Todd Schoenthaler and William Bootz – who exemplify the fact that not only has America been eager to live up to the Ellis Island inscription ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free’ but also to take those with curious surnames.
Also in there are such wonderfully exotic publications as the Chickasha News, from Grady County in Oklahoma, but as far as I can see (though I am prepared to be proved wrong) the little old Examiner appears to be the only limey news outlet being made privy to this information.
So having let our readers down for the majority of the season, I have decided to make a New Year’s resolution to ensure that the efforts of Richard Tortorelli, the assistant athletic director for communications at Oklahoma College Union, to keep the old country in the picture are not wasted.
This week’s headline is ‘OCU scrapes out 71-63 win over Northwestern’ and that was after Orlan Jackman ‘notched his second double-double for OCU with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four steals’.
Next week OCU Stars face Rogers State – I’ll try and keep you in the picture.
