SIXTEEN riders helped raise over £1,500 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance in a coast-to-coast ride.

Organised by Huddersfield Star Wheeler Mark Newby, of Newsome, in memory of his brother-in-law Graham Chaplin, 30, who died in a motorcycling accident on Snake Pass a year ago, the event proved enjoyable and successful despite some miserable weather.

The group covered 135 miles from Scarborough to Morecambe – particularly enjoying a chance to thaw out at the Bolton Arms in Leyburn!

All in all, it was a fitting tribute to Graham, who was flown to hospital in Sheffield by the Air Ambulance and the incident was later featured on the BBC series Helicopter Heroes.

The latest round of the Summer Cyclo Cross series was held at Brigshaw School, Kippax.

The race was won by Mark Twaites (Crosstrax). Owen Mitton and Andy Whitworth from Huddersfield Road Club were 11th and 12th respectively.

Star Wheelers’ Giles Bailey was 23rd and teammate Graham Piccavey 28th.

Star Wheeler Ivan Boyes rode the Paul Kay Memorial Road Race promoted by Leeds Road Club.

This was a 40-mile road race for second, third and fourth category riders on a 5.5-mile circuit on very bumpy roads around Thorner, north Leeds. Boyes finished just outside the top 10.
