SPEN Valley Flyers are looking to make their fourth season their best ever.

The roller hockey club based at Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre are coached by former England player Dan messenger, who also coaches the Northern Counties teams.

They train at Whitcliffe on Saturday’s from 5pm to 7pm and are seeking new members as they bid to build for further success with teams at Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and seniors.

The Under 11s were second in their league and won the cup in their first year, while last year they won the league and the cup and this year they are so far unbeaten – strong contenders to do the double again.

The Under 13s also won the league and cup double last year and, this season, are top of the league. They finished second in the league and won the cup in their first season.

It’s a first season for the Under 15s – they are a young team with two of the Under 11s involved – and they have drawn all their matches so far and still have all to play for.

The Flyers’ senior side are again very young and have yet to win a match, but they are showing tremendous determination.

Spen have five players training in Peterborough once a month with the England coach.

They include Jenny O’Sullivan – a student at Salendine Nook High – and Charlie Oakes, who are two of the best goalkeepers in the region.

The others are Zak Holt-Dunning, Zoe Hannah (17), who is awaiting a decision to see if she has made the senior ladies team that will be playing in Brazil later this year, and Keiran Constable (10).

Constable has just returned from Portugal, where he was England’s top scorer in a week-long event.

The Flyers would welcome new players of all ages and skating abilities.

They have also introduced a learn to skate session before the regular training to run 4pm to 5pm every Saturday. The session is for all the family, so anyone who doesn’t want to play can go along to have fun with the family (just turn up or further details from Jeanette on 07767 063014).
