BOROUGH of Kirklees swimmers failed to take titles at a very competitive North East Region Youth and Senior Championships in Sheffield – but still came away with eight medals and six new national qualifying times!

Katy Venters had to settle for second places in her main events the 100m and 200m backstroke while Mathew Marshall, who is only 16, did well to take second place in the men’s 200m butterfly.

Marshall was also part of the 800m freestyle team which did exceptionally well to take second place and now qualify for the national championships in August. Other team members were Lewis Dyson, Steven Thornton, Alex Garbiak.

Dyson and Garbiak also picked up bronze medals in the 400m and 800m freestyle and 100m backstroke respectively.

Garbiak, Dyson, Marshall and Robert Carrigill swam into third place in the 400m freestyle team and hope their time will be fast enough to get through to the national championships.

The club had a large number of swimmers travel to the Wrexham meet and they had great success.

Ryan Flanagan dominated the 13 years boys age group winning nine gold medals and picking up a new national qualifying time in the 400m freestyle.

Abby Mae Parkinson continues to make good progress with her racing and won seven gold medals in the 10 years age group.

Other multi gold medalists were: Regan Gregg, Kieron Robinson, James Matthews, Amy Royston, Nathan Rudge and George Flesher.
