THE Borough of Kirklees junior swimmers turned in a strong performance in the Yorkshire Championships held at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge to land 31 medals.

They won a staggering total of four gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze medals – with 77 other top 10 finishes.

It was 14-year-old Daniel Cross and nine-year-old Matthew Wilby who stole the show in South Yorkshire with a clutch of medals each.

Cross claimed gold in the 100m backcrawl, as well as three silvers in the 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley (IM) and the 100m breaststroke.

Wilby won gold with the 50m breaststroke and picked up silver in the 100m IM and 50m freestyle – and also took bronze in the 50m backcrawl.

Cian Gregg won gold in the 12 years 100m breaststroke and also got bronze in the 12 years 100m butterfly.

Avril Bowler added to the gold run winning the 9 years 50m breaststroke.

The club’s members are continuing to train hard for the next major championships which are the North East Counties, which will be held in Sunderland in December.

Kyle Chisholm (silver 14yrs 100m butterfly,100m backstroke & 100m freestyle), Holly Brook (bronze 13yrs 100m backcrawl), Ella Brierley (silver 10yrs 100m breaststroke), George Flesher (silver 14yrs 100m backcrawl and bronze in 100m butterfly & 100m freestyle) Hannah Pilling (silver 13yrs 100m backcrawl), Sunnivah Waterman (silver 9yrs 50m breaststroke), Nathan Watts (silver 10yrs 50m breast), Harry Wood (silver 12yrs 200IM,100m freestyle and bronze in 100m backstroke), Harrison Layden-Fritz (silver 10yrs 50m backcrawl, bronze in 100IM and 50m butterfly), Poppy Brown (bronze 11yrs 200IM), James Reidy (bronze 14yrs 200IM & 100m breaststroke) and Rebecca Fisher (bronze 13yrs 200IM).
