DARREN LINDLEY again came out on top when he and his chief rival Tim Dyson clashed in the final of the Huddersfield Table Tennis League’s Closed Championships at Newsome High School.

The two seeds had coasted through the semis, Lindley beating Ian McLean in straight sets, while Dyson despatched Shaun Ellis in similar fashion, to provided the climax of the evening.

Nine-times champion Dyson exploded into action and took the first two games with some fine looping and forehand smashes, but Lindley weathered the storm to come back strongly and level at 2-2.

And in a tit-for-tat final game Dyson suddenly ran out of power at 5-4 down and Lindley struck a series of forehand winners to run out 11-6 and retain his title.

The Ladies event did not take place due to a lack of entries, but there was plenty of interest throughout the day with plenty of junior talent on show, one of them, Daniel Adams, reaching four finals and winning three of them.

The band one singles final was his only defat, going down to the experienced Jonathan Taylor in five sets, but Adams did won the Junior Under 21, Under 18s and Mixed Ability Doubles with 15-year-old Lewis Williamson.

The men’s doubles final was another to have the crowd on their feet, with Tony Boyd and Mark Pugh retaining their title by edging out Lindley and Ian McLean.
