DEIGHTON Leisure Service were in for a shock when they won 16 out of a possible 18 games – but still lost their CSD Transport table tennis tournament first-round tie against Scissett Middle School.

Because of the tough handicapping, John Cook, Barry Drain and Kevin Senior from the Division I outfit found themselves more than 50 points adrift of their Division III opponents.

During a crucial period of the match, Harry Ness and Matthew Ellis from Scissett each took a game off Cook and Senior respectively, Ness winning 21-19 and Ellis hitting some impossible backhand top-spin smashes passed a startled Senior to win 21-16.

And with Scissett captain Adrian Wilson putting in a string of consistent performances in all his three sets, the final score when the handicaps were taken off resulted in a 474-419 victory for the school side.
